Paleobiology at the UAM

I am a paleobiologist professionally linked to the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid as an associate Professor in the Dptm. of Biology, Secretary of its Center of Integration for Paleobiology (CIPb), and Coordinator of the Research Team at the Las Hoyas fossil site. I am also Research Associate at the Dinosaur Institute of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles (USA), and Associate Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Cape Town (Southafrica).

Much of my work relies heavily on the use and development of mathematical and digital shape analytical tools, and my interest in organic evolution has led me to study various organisms, modern and fossil, invertebrates and vertebrates, and even plants (!). However, much of my research pays real attention (and passion!) to the paleobiology and phenotypic evolution of archosaur reptiles, specially non-avian dinosaurs and birds. More recently, I have become involved in other deep-time studies, including the multidisciplinary complexity of the remarkable Las Hoyas fossil site (Lower Cretaceous, Cuenca), on the intriguing tetrapod transition to land in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Uppsala (Sweden), and the study of the evolution of fascinating Permo-Trias synapsids with students and colleagues at the University of Cape Town.

I teach varied 'Paleo' classes in the Degree of Biology and digital techniques at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and specialized workshops and courses in shape analysis (Geometric Morphometrics) worldwide.
